Watch The Theron #041 – The Last Face (2016)
The Last Face is widely considered one of the worst and most pretentious films ever made. What a way to wind down Watch The Theron! Originally conceived by Robin Wright (as her passion project), Sean Penn added Charlize Theron to the cast (in Robin Wright’s part, no less!) after he and Wright divorced and after he and Theron began dating. The Last Face (and Sean Penn) deemed it a good idea to set a love story against the backdrop of war-torn Africa. In this episode, we try to figure out what the movie was thinking, whether or not the movie suffers from white savior syndrome, and whether or not there’s any redeeming qualities in this movie. The good news, though, is that the last five movies in the initial run of Watch The Theron will yield no bad surprises — at least none as bad as this — so it seems as though we’re in the clear!
