The Trust (2016): Thoughts From #SXSW2016 [Joey’s Spoiler-Free Review]
In about a month or so, THE TRUST is (supposedly?) scheduled to hit DirecTV. In two months (again, supposedly), it’s schedule to hit Blu-ray. (I think.)
Yesterday, though, I was able to get into the world premiere of the film at SXSW 2016. I don’t want to include anything too spoilery here, because this is Cage’s best movie (by FAR) since JOE, and maybe his most fun since KICK-ASS. We kind of lamented the fact that a lot of Cage’s most recent films were less-than-stellar, but it’s safe to say that The Trust is a true return to form for Cage in every way.
Written and directed by first-time filmmakers (who are also brothers!), The Trust features terrific performances from both Cage and Elijah Wood. The film is really funny — and features tons of awesome Cage moments, including a freakout good enough to warrant inclusion on the #CageClub award ballots (!!!) — but seamlessly transitions into a more serious tone when the time calls for it.
I filmed the 17-minute Q&A session that followed the screening. While Cage wasn’t there, both filmmakers and Elijah Wood were there. There are some spoilers, so I’m gonna do some editing on it, but it’s worth checking out — especially since Elijah Wood said half the reason he took the film was so that he could work alongside Cage. Stars — they’re just like us!
I’m so excited for you all to see this movie. It’s interesting, it’s well-made, it’s funny, and it’s well-acted. Now that we’re all caught on up Cage’s films, each film “means more” because they’re so few and far between. It’s not like we can wait two days and watch another one of his films — now, there are months-long waits in between each film. As prolific as Cage is, it’s not enough! I want more and more and more, especially when they’re as good as The Trust is.
